CVB PARKS

PETERSEN STUDIO is leading the design of the 46-acre Chula Vista Bayfront Parks, the central public-realm catalyst for the 535-acre CVB District, southern California’s last major post-industrial waterfront redevelopment opportunity.  The KTU+A / PETERSEN STUDIO Design Team was recently selected amongst a competitive field including many of the top landscape architects in the country, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the Port of San Diego, the City of Chula Vista, and local communities to realize their long-held ambitions for this vast underutilized waterfront. 

The project includes two large parks, representing the full spectrum of San Diego’s diverse waterfront park experiences.  Sweetwater Park, adjacent to the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge, will focus on natural resource restoration and environmental education, with miles of trails, boardwalks, and overlooks set within a 21-acre mosaic of restored coastal scrub, maritime dune, and salt marsh.  Harbor Park, adjacent to the planned Resort Conference Center/Hotel and the existing Chula Vista Marina, will become an actively-programed waterfront destination, with amenities including multi-use civic event spaces, family/play areas, plazas, gardens, public art, water features, a mile-long waterfront promenade, water access and water recreation opportunities, and potentially a new urban beach for south bay residents.

Initial tasks include programming, validation of the preliminary $46 million parks budget, and conceptual phasing strategies that prioritize key amenities for residents and visitors while supporting ongoing development.
